Transcript	May 2, 1972 Professor H. Harvard Arnason Dear Mr. Arnason: I was speaking with Lloyd Goodrich last week about a project for which I have a Guggenheim Fellowship, namely 'Alfred Steiglitz and Avant-Garde Painting in America.' He suggested that I get in touch with you concerning access to the Hartley material which was assembled by the American Art Research Council. I understand from Mr. Goodrich that you are writing a book on Marsden Hartley. My work will touch on Hartley but will not concentrate on him as a single figure. My aim is to discuss the five or six major painters associated with Stieglitz and deal with the interaction between them and with Stieglitz. Mr. Goodrich showed me the memo describing the conditions which limit the use of the Hartley material. I understand that the material is restricted for anyone else planning a monograph on Hartley, but that it would be available to writers and researchers who would use it in studies of early American modernism, the Stieglitz group, etc. As I said, Hartley represents only a part of the total picture in the work I am doing-albeit an important part.
