November 26, 1974 Mr. John Rhoades 186 Russell Road Princeton, New Jersey 03540 Dear Mr. Rhoades: Thank you very much for your kind letter and for sending the book on the Smithsonian Institution. I was delighted to read about the activities of Miss Rhoades. I was also interested In seeing the valuation of the Stieglitz photographs which you gave to Williams College. They were very lucky indeed to receive these gifts from you. On the subject of Stieglitz' photography, I have a suspicion that the five pictures you showed me are photogravures, rather than original photographic prints. Since his gravures are practically as good as original prints, many cases, it makes little difference. Furthermore, he rarely printed his photographs in larger sizes, so to have Stieglitz Images the size that you have is a distinct advantage. I have seen similar ones in private collections and In art galleries and I believe I am right. As you know, the Steerage is much better known through the photogravure version, 11' x 14', than in the original photographic print, which is not very impressive. I appreciated having an opportunity talking with you in Princeton. It was very helpful and gave me something of a feeling for Katharine Rhoades. I have passed on my information to Nick Clark who appreciated having the data from you. I will, as you suggest, see that the essay on Miss Rhoades, which will make up one page of our catalogue, is sent to you for your approval prior to your departure. Many thanks again for your help. With best regards. Sincerely, William I. Homer Chairman
