June 12, 1980 Dear Ms. Carlyle: I am interested in the work of Marsden Hartley, the noted American painter, and I wondered whether you had any letters by Hartley to Horace Traubel, or from Traubel to Hartley. I am particularly interested in the earlier phase of Hartley's life, during which time he was on friendly terms with Traubel. If you do have any such letters, would you give me an idea, roughly, of what you have. It would not be necessary to give me a full list but just a general indication with the dates covered. Many thanks for your help. Sincerely, William I. Homer Chairman
