September 14, 1976 Mr. Eliot Porter Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501 Dear Mr. Porter: I am an art historian who has gradually turned to the history and criticism of photography, and it is in this connection that I am writing you. I am putting the finishing touches on a book on Alfred Stieglltz and the artists of his circle; to be published early in 1977. I have also written articles on Steichen, Strand, and Muybridge. I hope you will be willing to reply to a question which I have, thiat is, could you write me, informally, your recollections and impressions of Stieglitz, particularly in the earlier years of his activities as a photographer and gallery proprietor. Any impressions, however insignificant they might seem would be extremely useful to me, since I am depending to a large extent on witness accounts. I am sure you could be very helpful in this regard, and I hope you will be willing to write me. I hope that this request will not be too much of a bother for you. All I can say is that I am a serious scholar and writer, and anything you can do to help me will be greatly appreciated and, I hope, will be constructively used. Sincerely, William I. Homer Chaiman P.S. I knew Steve Porter when I was teachinp at Cornell, 1964--66.
