Biographical and Historical Note

The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation was established as the result of an agreement made in 1987 by the executors of Georgia O'Keeffe's estate: Juan Hamilton, Raymond Krueger, and June O'Keeffe Sebring. Formerly chartered on May 25 1989, its mission was to expand and protect the artist legacy of Georgia O'Keeffe for the public benefit. The Foundation was governed by and operated with a board of directors, officers, and staff. Some of the significant projects of the Foundation included: involvement in the publication of a catalogue raisonne of all O'Keeffe's known artistic works; distribution of all art in the Foundation's collection; preservation of O'Keeffe's home and studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico; and, participation in national and international exhibitions that presented O'Keeffe's art to a wide range of audiences. The Foundation dissolved in 2006.

Scope and Content Note

In the 1990s, The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation began gathering information for the development of a collection management policy for Georgia O'Keeffe's home and studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico, which they oversaw. A key part of the project was to establish a pictorial timeline of both the interiors and exteriors of the property. Georgia Smith, assistant curator and toor coordinator with the Foundation, was the primary project organizer, contacting a numerous photographers and intuitions holding potential photographs for a record of the property. Individuals and institutions provided a range of materials: contact sheets, photographs, photocopies, written records of their experiences, and advice on finding additional photographs and records.

In addition to images of the property, there are a large number of photographs of O'Keeffe, or O'Keeffe with friends and acquaintances. The materials in this collection were used for study and reference purposes only, and may be of interest to researchers involved in similar efforts.
